Postcrossing Lingo Guide for Postcrossers

Postcard Lingo Every Postcrosser Should Know

Once you’ve been on postcrossing long enough, you’ll start to see lingo and abbreviations that you may not recognize. Here’s a quick rundown of what I think some of the most important postcard lingo every Postcrosser should know about.

Postcard Related Lingo

The following abbreviations and terms refer to specific types of postcards

MOTW Postcard

Maps of the world themed postcards printed by Postcardmarket are extremely popular. Almost every country has a map, and maybe people try to collect them all.

FOTW Postcard

Flags of the World Postcards, also made by Postcardmarket, are similar to MOTW. The difference is that instead of maps these postcards have (you guessed it) national flags. Each postcard has a different country’s flag along with some facts about that country.

Maxicard

When I first joined Postcrossing, I thought that a maxicard was just a giant sized postcard. Turns out that maxicards refer to postcards where the stamp and image are on the front of card. In addition, the image, stamp, and postmark must all be closely related.

Here’s an example maxicard that I received earlier this year. Sadly these type of cards are a bit difficult to get a hold of here in the states, but sometimes you’ll find them at antique shops or used bookstores.

GF Postcard

The Greeting From postcards from Postallove is another series popular with collectors.

These distinct cards feature a beautiful image from a country, along with the number of postcrossers in that country and facts about major points of interests.

Until next time, happy postcrossing!
