If you’re a regular postcrosser, you should know that it will cost more to send a postcard. USPS is increasing the price of postage, starting on January 22nd, 2023. Depending on the type of stamps you use, it’ll cost you somewhere between a 4% and 5% more to send a postcard starting soon.
2022 vs 2023 Stamp Prices
The table below shows cost difference between the 2022 and 2023 price of postcard and letter stamps
Stamp Type | December 2022 Price | January 2023 Price |
---|---|---|
Domestic Letters (1 oz.) | $0.60 | $0.63 |
Domestic Postcards | $0.44 | $0.48 |
International Postcards | $1.40 | $1.45 |
International Letters (1 oz.) | $1.40 | $1.45 |
Additional 1 oz. | $0.24 | $0.24 |
What about Forever Stamps?

USPS Forever Stamps are always worth the cost to send a 1 oz. domestic letter. If you bought a roll of Forever Stamps in December 2022, those stamps will increase in value from $0.60 to $0.63 on January 22nd, 2023
The same is also true for for USPS Global Forever stamps, which will increase in value from $1.40 to $1.45.
What about Postcard Stamps?

Much like Forever stamps, USPS Postcard Stamps are always worth the cost to send a domestic postcard – no matter when you purchased them. It’s important to know that this only applies to actual postcard stamps – the most popular of which is the blue coral reef stamp. Regardless, these type of stamps will always have the word “postcard” printed on them.
As an aside, USPS has a new Postcard Stamp for 2023. This new stamp features a cute cartoon image of a school bus.

How Many Stamps do I need to Send a Postcard Overseas?
It depends – you need at least one stamp, but in reality you can use as many as you like! You can mail a postcard or letter overseas using any number and combination of stamps, so long as the total postage adds to up $1.45.
Here are a few popular combinations:
- Use 1 USPS Global Forever Stamp (the cost of sending an international postcard is the same as sending an international 1 oz. letter. Convenient!)
- Use 2 USPS Forever stamps and an additional 1 oz. Stamp. You’ll overpay by $0.05, but only using Global Forever Stamps gets boring quickly!
- Use 2 USPS Forever Stamps, then make up the difference using $0.01, $0.05, or $0.10 stamps. You can find these smaller denomination stamps at your local Post Office, or at usps.com/stamps
Closing Thoughts
Although nobody likes rising prices, USPS stamps are still an incredible value. After all, you can send a postcard thousands of miles for under $2.00! I can’t think of many other activities you can do for $2.00 that bring so much joy.
